A Wish for the Entire Family!

In a world ruled by tech, family time is rare. Add childhood illness, and it’s nearly impossible.

“Ever since Rachael’s illness, there was a stew of emotions across the household: Fear for Rachael and what she is going through, anxiety as parents about how we couldn’t prevent [her illness]. Her brother felt guilty about being away at college while she was going through the worst of it. It felt like we did not have the energy to do anything but worry,” said Rachael’s dad, Dan.

Diagnosed with a heart condition, Rachael spent countless hours in hospital rooms—through a two-week stay, surgeries and frequent outpatient appointments. “When I was in the hospital, it wasn’t just me going through stuff,” shared Rachael. “That’s why I wanted to pick [a wish] my whole family could enjoy.”

Rachael’s wish forged the opportunity for quality family time heightened by a new adventure – a cruise.

When Make-A-Wish granted Rachael a wish and sent us all on a cruise to Alaska, it gave us a chance to relax and release. I cannot emphasize enough how this gesture of kindness impacted us and helped us feel like a normal family again,” said Dan.

As Pacific Northwesterners, Rachael’s family loves being in the great outdoors. An Alaskan cruise let her family explore and soak in the breathtaking beauty of Alaska from the open sea.

From the misty fjords of Endicott Arm to the icy brilliance of Dawes Glacier, every stop — Skagway, Juneau, and beyond — was a postcard of wonder. Rachael’s family went river rafting, watching salmon leap from the water. And they rode a scenic railroad through breathtaking landscapes, collecting souvenirs at every stop. The cruise ship itself was an adventure. From indoor skydiving to swimming and surfing, they explored every amenity of the vessel. One of her highlights was a behind-the-scenes tour with the captain, where she observed the crew operations and ship controls. “That was super cool, and I felt special because nobody else got to do that,” shares Rachael.

Although her family felt like VIPs, Dan shared his personal highlight: “Seeing Rachael enjoying life without compromise. Her illness prevents her from being overly active, and a cruise allows you to have fun with as much or as little energy as you like. On her good days, she was walking around shopping in Alaska or “skydiving” on the ship. And when she needed to slow down, she could sit in the pool or watch a show. Being able to laugh and have fun together is our family’s greatest highlight of this wish.

Extra, Extra – Exciting News!

Is there something you can’t start your day without?

Coffee is non-negotiable. It prepares me for the day so I can lead with intention.

What’s a leadership lesson you’ve learned that shapes how you approach your work?

Stay curious, versatile, and embrace the role of a utility player. I approach leadership with a mindset of flexibility—always ready to step in wherever I’m needed. Whether it’s strategy, operations, or frontline support, I believe that true leadership means modeling adaptability and fostering a culture that’s responsive to change. As CEO, I’m excited to collaborate with our incredible staff, volunteers, and donors to drive sustainable growth.

What inspired you to join Make-A-Wish, and what’s kept you here for over 25 years?

Before joining the staff as a wish coordinator, I was a wish-granting volunteer. From my very first wish, I was hooked. The joy and hope a wish brings to a child and their family is life-changing. The mission compels me—the incredible community of people who come together to create something magical for kids facing critical illness. That spirit of compassion and teamwork continues to inspire me, and I’m honored to lead us forward.

How can supporters — both new and longtime — make the biggest difference right now?

To grant a wish to every eligible child in our territory, we need the full strength of our community—your time, talents, and generosity. Learn how you can get involved at wish.org/akwa/ways-help-us.

If your colleagues gave you a nickname, what would it be?

Celebrating 20 years of this Kid-Friendly Tradition in Alaska 🎃

This September marked 20 years of the Ian Robbins Memorial Trick or Treat in the Heat—an Alaskan tradition started by wish parents Joyce and Sean to honor Ian’s dream of one last Halloween. With ongoing leadership from Spirit Halloween, it continues to bring joy to kids year after year.

“We didn’t comprehend its impact until Target approached us, asking when we needed candy and costumes by for this event,” shared wish dad, Sean. “Trick or Treat in the Heat has created a ripple effect in the Halloween supply chain! And it’s really brought neighbors and families together in a fun way.”

Ian’s mom, Joyce, reflected, “Kids love being able to wear their costumes in September, when it’s not as wet or cold. We leave a bowl with a photo of Ian in his Buzz Lightyear costume out so that kids can leave candy to remember him. Every year, our son’s short life still has an impact. And on this 20th anniversary, two rainbows emerged – like a hello from Heaven. We’re grateful.”

Since its inception in 2005, Trick or Treat in the Heat has raised over $300,000 for Make-A-Wish. It’s become a beloved tradition in Alaska, nurturing community and generosity.

Expanding our Seahawks Partnership 🏈

For the first time in over 30 years of granting wishes—including two this fall—the Seahawks named Make-A-Wish a Spirit of 12 partner, joining 11 other nonprofits in a powerful season of giving. Our volunteers fundraised at Training Camp and on gameday through a Seahawks 50/50 Raffle, where 50% of proceeds will be distributed evenly amidst partners. At the pre-season game vs. the Chiefs, Make-A-Wish volunteers helped set a pre-season record jackpot of $57,530!

Lindsey Goss, Sr. Coordinator, Community & Corporate Engagement, said, “A fan approached me to share that her son’s wish had been granted in the 1990s. Initially not planning to buy a raffle ticket, she returned later and purchased 200 tickets in his honor after learning how the raffle supports Make-A-Wish.”

When Lindsey started saying, “Support Make-A-Wish” instead of “Buy Raffle Tickets,” fans who said they normally wouldn’t participate stopped to listen and give. “It was incredible to see how deeply people connect with our mission,” Goss said.

Thanks to a match from the Allen Family Philanthropies Foundation, each partner is expected to receive around $95,000 this season. Let’s hear it for our wonderful Seahawks partnership and this incredibly generous community!
