In a world ruled by tech, family time is rare. Add childhood illness, and it\u2019s nearly impossible.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n \u201cEver since Rachael\u2019s illness, there was a stew of emotions across the household: Fear for Rachael and what she is going through, anxiety as parents about how we couldn\u2019t prevent [her illness]. Her brother felt guilty about being away at college while she was going through the worst of it. It felt like we did not have the energy to do anything but worry,<\/strong>\u201d said Rachael\u2019s dad, Dan.<\/span><\/p>\n Diagnosed with a heart condition, Rachael spent countless hours in hospital rooms\u2014through a two-week stay, surgeries and frequent outpatient appointments. \u201cWhen I was in the hospital, it wasn\u2019t just me going through stuff,\u201d shared Rachael. \u201cThat\u2019s why I wanted to pick [a wish] my whole family could enjoy.”<\/span><\/p>\n Rachael\u2019s wish forged the opportunity for quality family time heightened by a new adventure \u2013 a cruise.<\/span><\/p>\n “When Make-A-Wish granted Rachael a wish and sent us all on a cruise to Alaska, it gave us a chance to relax and release. I cannot emphasize enough how this gesture of kindness impacted us and helped us feel like a normal family again<\/strong>,\u201d said Dan.<\/span><\/p>\n As Pacific Northwesterners, Rachael\u2019s family loves being in the great outdoors. An Alaskan cruise let her family explore and soak in the breathtaking beauty of Alaska from the open sea.<\/span><\/p>\n From the misty fjords of Endicott Arm to the icy brilliance of Dawes Glacier, every stop \u2014 Skagway, Juneau, and beyond \u2014 was a postcard of wonder. Rachael\u2019s family went river rafting, watching salmon leap from the water. And they rode a scenic railroad through breathtaking landscapes, collecting souvenirs at every stop. The cruise ship itself was an adventure. From indoor skydiving to swimming and surfing, they explored every amenity of the vessel. One of her highlights was a behind-the-scenes tour with the captain, where she observed the crew operations and ship controls. \u201cThat was super cool, and I felt special because nobody else got to do that,” shares Rachael.<\/span><\/p>\n Although her family felt like VIPs, Dan shared his personal highlight: \u201cSeeing Rachael enjoying life without compromise<\/strong>. Her illness prevents her from being overly active, and a cruise allows you to have fun with as much or as little energy as you like. On her good days, she was walking around shopping in Alaska or \u201cskydiving\u201d on the ship. And when she needed to slow down, she could sit in the pool or watch a show. With ongoing leadership from Spirit Halloween, it continues to bring joy to kids year after year.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe didn\u2019t comprehend its impact until Target approached us, asking when we needed candy and costumes by for this event,\u201d shared wish dad, Sean. \u201cTrick or Treat in the Heat has created a ripple effect in the Halloween supply chain! And it\u2019s really brought neighbors and families together in a fun way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Ian\u2019s mom, Joyce, reflected, \u201cKids love being able to wear their costumes in September, when it\u2019s not as wet or cold. We leave a bowl with a photo of Ian in his Buzz Lightyear costume out so that kids can leave candy to remember him. Every year, our son\u2019s short life still has an impact. And on this 20th anniversary, two rainbows emerged \u2013 like a hello from Heaven. At the pre-season game vs. the Chiefs, Make-A-Wish volunteers helped set a pre-season record jackpot of $57,530!<\/p>\n Lindsey Goss, Sr. Coordinator, Community & Corporate Engagement, said, \u201cA fan approached me to share that her son\u2019s wish had been granted in the 1990s. Initially not planning to buy a raffle ticket, she returned later and purchased 200 tickets in his honor after learning how the raffle supports Make-A-Wish.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n When Lindsey started saying, \u201cSupport Make-A-Wish\u201d instead of \u201cBuy Raffle Tickets,\u201d fans who said they normally wouldn\u2019t participate stopped to listen and give. \u201cIt was incredible to see how deeply people connect with our mission,\u201d Goss said.<\/p>\n Thanks to a match from the Allen Family Philanthropies Foundation, each partner is expected to receive around $95,000 this season.
