Dr. Wright knew who to approach about this idea. Me. You see, I\u2019m a composer.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n While I was familiar with Make-A-Wish, the timing of this project hit home for me. My wife had been in and out of the hospital for about a year, so working on this song was good for my soul, therapeutic.<\/span><\/p>\n The song emerged when I visited the Make-A-Wish Alaska and Washington headquarters. During an office tour, the President and CEO, Melissa Arias shared stories about the wish kids whose pictures hung on the wall and I started to hear music in my mind.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n It\u2019s hard to relate to what others go through, but music gives you an experience<\/i> without needing words. It allows us all to connect<\/i> universally. The music I compose is emotional storytelling<\/b>. And \u201cOne Wish\u201d<\/b> tells a story of people coming together. To help. To bring healing. Other times, you\u2019re in the water, struggling as the waves keep coming. And sometimes you are in a boat, extending a helping hand to someone in need.<\/span><\/p>\n Jen Wigen has experienced all three perspectives with Make-A-Wish. When the elevator doors opened, we were in the dark, but the light shined on the Pediatric Oncology and Hematology sign.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Jen had seen this before, but from the shore so to speak. In 2002, she worked at Make-A-Wish as a wish coordinator. She\u2019d seen numerous families go through the cancer journey, where a wish became a bright spot on the horizon.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cYou never expect it to be your story. Stories can change perspective, and the ability to share stories that shapeshift opinions and beliefs is a superpower; one that Ariane uses for good. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Before reporting on wish stories, Ariane assumed that only terminal kids received wishes; however, she said, \u201c\u2026while conducting interviews with wish families, I got to understand their stories and realized families could get a break from the mundane, from hospital trips, through a wish. And it wasn\u2019t just for terminal kids. It was for sick kids AND their whole family.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n During her tenure at the station, Ariane has covered numerous wish stories and emceed the chapter\u2019s Happiness Hour<\/b> event in Anchorage, where she inspired a room full of guests to get out of their chairs and form a long line by the Fund-A-Wish star board to pledge a gift.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t think people know the IMPACT that Make-A-Wish has on families, so I talk about how each story impacts me.\u201d Ariane said, \u201cThese kids are brave! What they go through makes you step back and analyze your own life<\/b>.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Life gets busy. Stories make us pause, reflect, and, hopefully, take action.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Make-A-Wish is grateful for storytellers like Ariane. We also appreciate air miles. Anytime.
