\u201cEver since I was a kid, I’ve wanted to be an artist.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Art gives me a way to show off my unique perspective of the world; it\u2019s a way to showcase the intersectionality of myself and my interests. There is nothing quite like the feeling of being in the flow when creativity hits. The problem is having a space all my own for this.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s why I wished for a shed converted into an art studio. Having my own creative space has been transformational, for my creativity and for my health.\u202f<\/b>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My wish gave me something to look forward to when I was going through something really difficult. After a lifetime of inexplicable medical issues and a years-long diagnosis process, I\u2019d just been diagnosed with a genetic condition called Ehlers Danlos syndrome.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This rare, life-threatening condition affects my connective tissues. Even though I\u2019d been living with it my whole life, something about having a name to it made it all feel more finite. I started using crutches and going to physical therapy. Suddenly, I was dealing with the realization that I have a genetic disorder that doesn\u2019t have a cure.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That’s when Make-A-Wish stepped into my life and brought joy and light along with it.<\/b>\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My wish helped make up for the fact that my childhood and adolescence were, in a sense, taken from me.<\/b><\/span> I\u2019d spent many of my childhood days bouncing in-and-out of hospitals and appointments; there were days that I wasn\u2019t able to go to school or hang out with friends. My life often felt off balance, but my wish helped me to regain my center.\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Now, I have a space to call my own. It gives me an escape from a world that can be difficult to navigate with the use of mobility aids. It gives me a break from my house that\u2019s become all-too familiar in a time when protecting my compromised immune system is more important than ever.<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ll never forget the moment I came home to the surprise that my shed was ready. Seeing my brother and my volunteers and the care they put into making it just right … it was priceless. The space is so cozy and personalized. It\u2019s become my sanctuary, and I love it.\u202f<\/b>\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Make-A-Wish will continue to be part of my life. I\u2019m working on artwork for some fundraisers; I keep in touch with my volunteers. As I further my art career, my shed will give me a place to be creative. And it will always serve as a reminder that I have people in my corner who are cheering me on, even when things are tough. I can\u2019t thank you enough for giving me this incredible, life-changing gift.<\/b>\u201d\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThink of a time in your life, an experience you had, that really made you feel joy. And you know that any time afterward, you can go back to that place and have that same feeling.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That is what wishes provides for kids facing critical illnesses. You\u2019re giving them\u202fmoments\u202fof joy that they can go back to and be in that place when they are going through the hardest time in their lives. Or, they can look forward to the wish that\u2019s coming. You are so important, so needed and so loved by our wish kids, their families and the Make-A-Wish staff. Without you, none of this would be possible!\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ll never forget the look on Nicole\u2019s face when we surprised them with their art studio. Nicole was absolutely glowing, <\/b><\/span>just doing 360-degree turns around the room. Every time Nicole\u202fturned,\u202fthey\u2019d notice something else.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now,<\/b> months later, I can still picture Nicole in the studio<\/b>,<\/span> feeling happy and feeling good.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nicole\u2019s wish will continue to impact their life. <\/b><\/span>Their art studio is going to help them advance in their talents and make them bigger and more creative. And Nicole’s going to use those to do something bigger in the world.\u201d\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you talk with Nicole, they almost speak in color. Nicole is so much fun and there are so many different parts to their personality. Granting Nicole\u2019s wish was a chance to bring their interests and favorite things together in one place.\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The thing I\u2019ll remember most about granting Nicole\u2019s wish is the laughter\u2014how much fun we had while putting together the furniture and d\u00e9cor for the shed, and then the moment Nicole’s wish was revealed. Seeing the joy on their face was the best part. Everyone\u2019s face hurt from smiling so much.\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Through Make-A-Wish, I\u2019m able to see the best of our community coming together, day after day.<\/b><\/span> The compassion, love and joy that wishes bring into a family\u2019s life provide kids with critical illnesses a different kind of medicine they can\u2019t find in a doctor\u2019s office.\u202f\u202f\u00a0\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And being a wish-granting volunteer not only energizes me, but it also allows me to share a culture of philanthropy with my three-and-a-half-year-old daughter. It gives me a chance to talk with her about helping others and set an example that I hope she\u2019ll follow one day soon.\u201d<\/b>\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
